LAHORE – The Punjab has surpassed the wheat sowing target set for the year 2023-24.

Wheat has been sowing on 16.5 million acres land as against the set target of 16 million acres land with production target of 25 million metric tons for the year 2023-24.

Last year, wheat was sown on 16.014 million acres land as against the target of 16 million acres land.

As per the media reports, higher price of wheat in the open market than the support price was the main reason behind surpassing the sowing target.

Timely announcement of the support price of Rs 4000 per maund this season also motivated the growers to sow wheat on more land.

There are also positive indicators of achieving the wheat production target of 25 million metric tons.

Certified seed was used by the growers. At the same time, DAP fertilizer application also doubled this year as compared to the previous year.

Though there was shortage of urea and higher prices of other different fertilizers, good rains during October and November and availability of enough water compensated for fertilizers to some extent.

There are forecast of rains during last 10 days of December, which will further improve the water availability.
