Lahore and Karachi lead the list of the most polluted cities in the world with the Air Quality Index reaching hazardous and very unhealthy levels respectively on Tuesday night.

Though the biggest cities in the country remained in the top five polluted cities of the world during the last week, they are occupying first and second slots for the very first time.

At 11:30 pm, the AQI of Lahore was recorded at the hazardous level of 413, the highest in the world.

Karachi grabbed the second slot with an AQI level of 251 (very unhealthy).

India’s capital Delhi remained in the third spot with an AQI level of 215 followed by Bangladesh’s Dhaka where AQI was recorded at 186.

According to iqair.com, the Indian city Kolkata remained in fifth place with an AQI level of 180.

Medical experts have suggested taking necessary measures to avoid smog-related hazards.

“Avoid going outdoors unnecessarily. If unavoidable, wear glasses and masks while going outdoors. Wash hands, face and eyes on returning indoors. Extra care should be given to elderly people and children”, said Dr Abdul Rauf, a family physician running a clinic at Usman Gunj, a congested locality in Northern Lahore.
