Houston in touch. NASA reconnects with Capstone lunar lander

NASA restored lost on Tuesday communication with the Capstone spacecraft launched to the Moon. “Mission operators have re-established contact with NASA Capstone”– indicated in a message published on Wednesday on the NASA website.

The launch to the Moon of Capstone took place last week from the launch site on the Mahia Peninsula in New Zealand using the Electron launch vehicle of the American company Rocket Lab. The start of the mission was repeatedly postponed due to the need for additional work to prepare for the flight.

The apparatus, weighing about 25 kg, should help calculate the orbit for the future American lunar station Gateway. NASA believes that Capstone will reach the goal in three months and spend at least six months in lunar orbit.
